Sacagawea

Hi my name is Sacagawea. I was born in 1788 in Present-Day Idaho, to a Shoshone Chief. We lived in Teepes and hunted for food as seasons changed. When I was 10 a large Hidatsa war party attacked my tribe, killing many of my people including my mother. I was captured and taken prisoner 500 miles from home. I lived with this new tribe. They named me Sacagawea which means "Bird Woman". A few years later I was sold to Touissant Charboneau, a white fur trapper. I later became his 2nd wife. I gave birth to my first child, Jean Baptiste in 1805. In 1805 Lewis and Clark were sent by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the west and find a route to the pacific ocean. Also to bring peace to the Native Americans and teach them about the US. They hired my husband as an interpreter for other Native American tribes. They wanted me to go along as I would show peace to the tribes we met. I also knew some of the paths we would travel, since I was born into the Shoshone tribe. I carried my baby on my back. Clark nicknamed him pomp or little pompy. I was a great help on this expedition. I knew how to find food. I help keep the men healthy. I made clothes and shoes to help keep the men warm. I also was able to led some of the expedition, in areas that I knew. I also helped find knew plants and animals.
On the Journey we had a lot of hardships, but I was able to see my Shoshone people again. Including my brother, Chief Cameahwait. We did see the pacific ocean and a large skeleton of a whale. Our journey lasted 17 months until we were back with the Hidatsa people. In august 1812, I gave birth to my second child a girl named Lizette. I died on december 20, 1812 from a Putrid fever. Clark became legal guardian of my children to help give them a better life. I have lakes, rivers, mountains and parks named after me. There are statues of me around the US. Even one in Cheney, WA. In Spokane there is a school named after me. In 2000, there was a $1 coin minted to honor me, Sacagawea.
McKenna memorized a two minute speech for a school book report, and gave it many time over a two week period. She did a great job. We quite enjoyed learning about Sacagawea and her life. McKenna's Speech only touches on a little bit of the expedition. She was a great women. Some even say she was actually the first women to vote in the US as the Lewis and clark Expedition allowed her to vote on where to settle for the winter. Nice work McKenna!!

First Day Of Spring!!!

This past week we have had sunshine, rain, wind, more sun, hail x3, and last night brought in some snow. Today I went out and took some pictures of our flowers blooming, with snow next to them. Also there is a robin in one of the pictures. I have seen alot of birds in the last couple of days. Good thing the sun is starting to come out today to melt the snow.
Tae is holding her hair growing bunny she got from G&G Cutler. She has been fascinated with the grass growing on the bunnies. I think they will need a hair cut soon.

Top five exciting things of our past week....

5.Sacagawea comes for a visit. McKenna presented her Sacagawea book report to her class. She dressed up like her and memorized a two minute speech to give to her peers. Pictures will come later, when her school holds a Wax Museum night for the parents.
4. Date Night. Scott took me out on a date.
3.Parade. Scott took the girls to the St. Patrick's Day Parade here in Spokane. Their school principal was in it as Principal of the year or something like that. The girls lasted 20 minutes out in the cold. Then went for green milkshakes. (I guess they weren't to cold)I was in Time Out during this.
2. Movie Star. While at the parade, Scott saw Christian Slater filming a scene for an upcoming movie.
1.Time Out. Went with some friends to "Time Out For Women". Enjoy many wonderful talks and music. Nice for me to get away from the business of life. Learned some things to help improve my life. I am working on my five split seconds everyday.

Our new niece

Our new niece was born the same day that President Hinckley passed away. Her mother is a photogrpher and has taken beautiful pictures of Sami. On Saturday she was blessed at her grandparents home, by her father-my brother. Our family was the only one on my side not able to go. We heard it was a beautiful blessing. We look forward to meeting her this summer. Look how sweet she looks. Love her already.
